NYS Veterans Nursing Homes

New York State Department Health for veterans and their dependents operates nursing homes for NY veterans.  There are 5 NYS Veterans Homes in the state and you can find the address and phone numbers below.  For more information on requirements for admission call 1-888-838-7697.

New York VA Benefits for NY Veterans

Operation Recognition allows certain veterans to earn high school diplomas if they left school without graduating.
Section 305 of the NYS Education Law created Operation Recognition to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veterans who left school before graduation by awarding them a high school diploma.  For more information on this program call 1-518-474-8940.

There is also a Veterans Tuition Award for eligible veterans for undergraduate or graduate degree institutions and approved vocational training in New York.  For more information on this program call 1-888-697-4372.

There is also a Military Service Recognition Scholarships that provides financial aid to veterans, children, spouses, and financial dependents of members of the US Armed Forces who while NYS residents, died or became severely and permanently disabled while engaged in hostilities or training for hostilities.  For more on this program you can call 1-888-697-4372.

For Children of deceased and disabled veterans there is a Regents Award which can give up to $450 per year to students who served during certain time periods of national emergency.  Fore more information call 1-888-697-4372.

For blind veterans and surviving unmarried spouses of a blind veteran there is a Blind Annuity Program.  This program authorizes an annuity payment of $1,173.84 per veteran.  For eligibility requirments and more information call 1-888-838-7697.

There is also a mortgage program for NY veterans called the Homes for Veterans Program.  This program offers fixed-rate mortgages with interest rates 0.5% below the already low interest rates charged on SONYMA mortgages with closing cost assistance. For more information about eligibility and how to apply call 1-800-382-4663.

A Gold Star Parent Annuity of up to $500 per Gold Star parent of a deceased veteran.  For more information on eligibility call 1-888-838-7697.

The NYS Veterans' Property Tax Exemption provides a partial exemption on real property taxes to veterans’ of defined periods of war, veterans who received expeditionary medals or certain family members, as allowed by law.
There are three levels of benefits, depending on whether the veteran served in combat and/or was disabled. Exemptions are also subject to dollar limitations, pursuant to state and local law.  For information call 1-888-838-7697.


NY also has a Supplemental Burial Allowance of up to $6,000 is authorized for certain military personnel killed in combat or while on active duty in hostile/imminent danger locations on or after September 29, 2003. More info call 1-888-838-7697.

There is the Governor's Programs to Hire Persons/Veterans with Disabilities consist of two specialized programs. These programs are coordinated efforts to place individuals with disabilities in entry-level State jobs. No initial written or oral examinations are required for appointment. You must however, submit a formal application and a medical evaluation may be necessary for program certification. For more on this program call 1-518-233-3118.


 

Hunting Licenses & Fishing Permits are available at reduced cost to Veterans with a 40% or greater disability rating and free to NYS residents who are active members of the NYARNG, US Reserve or Active Duty.  For more information on how to apply and what is offered visit the NYS Parks website
